Health at the Margins: Writings on Primary Healthcare from Rural South Rajasthan is an edited volume that captures a decade-long journey of delivering responsive, community-based primary healthcare to tribal and migrant communities in rural southern Rajasthan. Drawing on the experiences of Basic Healthcare Services (BHS) and its network of AMRIT Clinics, the book explores what it takes to provide high-quality, people-centered primary healthcare in some of India’s most underserved settings.
Through a collection of essays, field reflections, and empirical research, the book examines multiple dimensions of primary healthcare including to maternal and child health, tuberculosis, malnutrition, migration and health, occupational illnesses such as silicosis, among others.
Grounded in the principles of equity, community empowerment, and health as a human right, the volume documents the evolution of a decentralized, nurse-led primary healthcare model. It also reflects on the broader ethical, social and systemic questions that emerge when that arise when healthcare is delivered in contexts marked by poverty, exclusion, and limited state capacity.
This book will be of interest to practitioners, researchers, policymakers, students of public health, and anyone who is interested in primary healthcare of the marginalized.
