Immersion & Fellowships

At BHS, we believe in nurturing young healthcare professionals and creating opportunities for immersive, hands-on learning. Through our training and fellowship initiatives, we offer exposure to rural healthcare models, mentoring, and skill-building experiences that cana inspire individuals to become change agents in primary healthcare.

Rural Sensitization Program

The Rural Sensitization Program is a 3-day immersion experience designed for medical students, postgraduate trainees, and young doctors. It introduces participants to rural life, community health challenges, and innovative models of care while encouraging them to reflect on their role in strengthening healthcare systems.

Originally started at Tribal Health Initiative (Sittilingi) and Gudalur Adivasi Hospital, RSPs have been hosted by BHS in North India since 2022. Today, these camps are organized across multiple locations in India, helping shape a new generation of socially committed health professionals.

Travel Fellowship

BHS is part of the Rural Health Care Collective, that runs the travel fellowship, an initiative for doctors passionate about primary healthcare. Coordinated by Tribal Health Initiative (Sittilingi, Tamil Nadu), the fellowship offers young doctors a 2–3-month immersion in rural health settings. At BHS, fellows work closely with our teams, receiving mentorship and practical exposure to primary healthcare delivery.

Here’s a blog written by one of the travel fellows as he reflects on his experience trying to help a sick child in a tribal community, highlighting the complexities of cultural differences, trust in the healthcare system, and the weight of personal histories in shaping people’s actions and decisions: https://www.travelfellowship.org/the-stories/johan

Nurse Fellowship

Aligned with our nurse-led primary healthcare model, the Nurse Fellowship Program supports nurses—especially those from tribal and minority communities—who may have taken career breaks due to gendered roles, family responsibilities, or childcare.

Through comprehensive training, fellows gain clinical, managerial, and community engagement skills, enabling them to re-enter the health workforce with confidence. Many fellows choose to continue working with BHS, while others pursue opportunities in the government sector.

In addition to these structured programs, BHS regularly hosts doctors, physiotherapists, nutritionists, public health students, and other professionals for short- and long-term assignments.
